Proper management of facilities, supplies and cows at calving time is important for cattle operation productivity and profitability.  In addition, a veterinarian relationship is important if cow assistance is needed during the calving process.  Therefore, MU Extension regional agriculture specialists Patrick Davis and Pat Miller worked with local veterinarian, Dr. Eric Andersen to develop a video that educates cattle producers on things to think about in preparation for the spring calving season.  Davis covers topics of preparing handling facilities for the calving season and the need for all supplies to be in the proper place prior to calving.  Davis also discusses the need for a calving plan and communication of that plan so people working with the cattle can utilize that plan during the calving season.  Andersen assists in the video by answering interview questions associated with calving problem identification, when calving assistance is appropriate, and cow and calf management after calving assistance.  Davis works with Miller to film the video and the video was placed on Davis’s personal Facebook page and MU Extension Facebook pages titled “MU Extension Ag on the Western Edge” and "MU Extension in Cedar County."  Facebook analytics showed this video reached 493 people, had 99 engagements, and 172 minutes viewed.  The analytics show the video was well received.  The facebook link for the video is https://www.facebook.com/Agonwesternedge/videos/650309312175659/UzpfSTEwMDAwNzIxMDI0MDU5NjoyNDUwNTQ5NjgxODYyMDE2/?id=100007210240596.  Video viewers learned more about preparation for the calving season, management of cows before and after calving time and what to do if assistance is needed during the calving process.  Knowledge gained from this video may help cattle producers have a more successful calving season.
