'Reaching Out' is a column published in The Journal newspaper and Upstate Today news website serving the residents of Oconee County, SC. Extension agents in Oconee County submit weekly articles that are published every Saturday in the 'Lifestyle' section of the newspaper and online. Extension Agent, Kerrie Roach, submits horticulture based articles on a monthly basis. Each article is written to educate on a timely topic using real-life situations and humor to keep a subscriber reading onward. The Seneca Journal has a distribution rate of 8,500 with the Upstate Today website and Facebook page reaching thousands of additional customers. Through documented feedback over the past year, the weekly column has garnered more than 35 direct calls/e-mails to agents along with more than 100 additional sign-ups for upcoming programs promoted through the educational column. This column has proved to be a success through documented increases in calls, e-mails, and attendance along with everyday homeowner education.
