Due to the increasing regulatory pressure surrounding agricultural activities taking place within the Suwannee River Valley (SRV) of North Florida, this informational video was created to help educate state and community leaders. Based on a needs-assessment from local growers and input from regional agricultural partners, a team of University of Florida/IFAS Extension agents created this video to increase an awareness of agriculture within the SRV. This video highlights the best management practices (BMPs) that producers are currently utilizing and the economic importance of agriculture to the area. This video was shown during University of Florida Agricultural Awareness Extension programs for government officials, state agencies, and school boards. It was also selected as a feature video in the UF/IFAS Panhandle E-News and shared on social media throughout the year. Recognizing this as an important educational tool, many of the leaders, in-turn, presented the video during their meetings. During agricultural awareness Extension programming, 103 attendees viewed the video. Of the attendees, 82% increased their general awareness and knowledge-base of agriculture. Also, 79% of attendees stated they would make more informed decisions after attending the programs. Other feedback included attendees stating that they will share this new knowledge and will actively participate in agricultural initiatives in the future. A positive, unintended outcome was the utilization of the video by various conservation and government agency leaders as a teaching tool during non-Extension related trainings. In total, nearly 1,600 people have viewed the video in formal classroom-style trainings and meetings.
The video has been shared by the Suwannee River Water Management District (SRWMD), Florida Association of County Agriculture Agents (FACAA), UF/IFAS Suwannee County Agriculture Extension, Young Farmers and Ranchers, and other partners a total of 46 times with a reach of over 9,600 people.
